Projects | Teen Scaling Project
Tooth decay, or dental caries, is one of the most prevalent chronic diseases for children worldwide, with more than 530 million children suffering from the decay of their primary teeth in 2019. Untreated dental caries can cause pain and infections, affecting a child's growing permanent teeth, general health, and quality of life. Fortunately, tooth decay can be prevented with proper toothbrushing and flossing, reduced sugar intake, and preventive dental treatments such as the use of fluoride.
The existing School Dental Care Service ("SDCS") in Hong Kong provided by the Department of Health ("DH") offers decent coverage, mainly to primary school students. Secondary school students are not entitled to this subsidized dental service, dental expenses for them are borne by their parents.
However, a group of teens in Hong Kong lack family support and dental care. Thus, Modern Dental Global Foundation and Modern Dental Group co-organize a “Teen Scaling Project” to provide free scaling service to teens living in child-care institutions, most of whom are deprived of proper care due to family issues.
